Oceanbird wing sail successfully tested at sea on Tiranna

Oceanbird has completed the installation and successful sea trial of its first onboard prototype, Wing560, on Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s 230-metre car carrier Tirranna. The milestone marks an important step in taking wind propulsion from development and testing into commercial operation.

The 46-metre-high and 14-metre-wide wing sail was installed at Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam between 21–24 June 2026. Tirranna departed the yard on 24 June equipped with the tiltable rigid wing sail, and as of 1 July both the Harbour Acceptance Test and Sea Acceptance Test had been completed.

For Wallenius Lines, as one of the owners behind Oceanbird together with Alfa Laval, the installation is an important milestone in the continued development and commercialization of wind propulsion for large ocean-going vessels.

Oceanbird was founded in 2021 as a joint venture between Alfa Laval and Wallenius Lines, with the purpose of developing wind propulsion solutions for the shipping industry. According to Oceanbird, one wing sail on an existing vessel can save up to 10 percent of fuel and emissions on optimal routes
